This handcrafted hair pin is made from European Horse Chestnut. A bowed horn shaped pin with a pale gentle grain pattern. The top face of the pin reveals a distinctive figure in the end grain.
European Chestnut grows all across Europe along with related species found in North America. It has been used for many years in cabinet work and turnery. Also known as a conker tree; it produces nuts that are the basis for the game 'conkers'. The wood to make this hair fork came from a tree that stood in a garden in Bath. Cut down due to disease; this tree was dearly loved by a family who spent many years climbing it's limbs, collecting it's conkers and admiring its beauty. I was kindly given a piece in an effort to honour the life of a wonderful tree.
This pin is finished with Nutshell wax. The product is eco friendly and non toxic, blending selected beeswax, Larch oil and essential oils to give your hairpin years of protection. It also uses noVOC's, formaldehyde or petrochemicals.
We are always striving to improve our processes environmentally. Hand tools are used over power tools where possible and sanding etc. is kept to a minimum.
