Contoured Laburnum & Sapele Wood Hair Pin

£40.00

This stunning handcrafted hair pin is made from the black grained yellowish Laburnum wood and contrasting lustrous orange/brown Sapele wood. The gentle contours makes for an unusual striped design and a positive 'lock' when wearing it in your hair. An eye catching, strong and sturdy pin.

Laburnum wood is a stunning wood found in southern Europe and here in the UK. Prized by furniture makers and luthiers this beautiful deep grained wood is often used for veneers. It is one of the few woods we have in the UK that feels and behaves like rosewood. Cross cut sections of this wood called 'oysters' have been used to make furniture for centuries. A stunning tree and a gorgeous wood, it never fails to impress. This piece was salvaged from a very old tree that had fallen in a storm in 2012. I've saved as much of the old dear as I could and I can't wait to see what further wonders lie beneath the bark.

Sapele Mahogany comes from West, Central and East Africa. It is often used in furniture and cabinet making and as a veneer for marquetry. It is also used in the construction of musical instruments, for building boats and as a flooring material. The Sapele that I used in this pin is from a small batch of highly figured pieces left over from flooring offcuts.
