Contoured Beech and Keruing Wood Hair Pin

£35.00

This unusual handcrafted hair pin is made from dark Keruing wood and contrasting flecked Beech wood strips. The contours make for an unusual striped design and a positive 'lock' when wearing it in your hair.

European Beech is commonly found across Europe and western Asia. It has been used for centuries in furniture making and for building musical instruments. This piece was left over from reclaimed planks that I used to build my workshop bench. Research has revealed that Beech trees prefer the company of other beech trees and often fuse their root systems together to equalise their photosynthesis. In this way the trees can share immunity and strength.

Keruing ( also known as Apitong ) is a hardwood super giant. It towers amongst the upper forest canopy across the Southeast Asian continent. It is a very strong, straight grained resinous wood. A deep history surrounds its fragrant oleoresin, known commercially and spiritually as Gurjan balsam or oil. The pieces I have in stock were salvaged from a set of garden furniture that were due to be thrown away. I was amazed that what I thought was going to be teak turned out to be this incredible wood.

Measurements:

15.4 cm Long

2.4 cm Wide
